We started learning Thai yesterday! Turns out... it's hard. Five tones. So far the hardest sounds we have learned are the "ng" and "bp." I have been trying it out on the streets with mixed results. I successfully understood "a little bit" and conveyed "spicy?" I've been making flash cards in a (probably hopeless) attempt to expedite my language abilities. Today we actually wrote in the Thai script, which was pretty exciting. Except for when I wrote one of the letters backwards. Oops.
Orientation's going splendidly. We're learning about the culture, politics and history of Thailand. So far the speakers have been outstanding and I'm really appreciating getting a grasp on the context of the society and culture I'm walking into oh-so ignorantly.
Internet access is still pretty sketch. I only have access during the week from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. Seattle time. Will try to upload some photos soon.
Much love to all!

Sounds like you are getting a lot of intense education. I know you will take advantage of the invaluable input from your instructors. Hopefully, they are telling you that it is important to eat fruits and veggies (sorry, I just had to do a Mom thing)... Love Ya!! Mom aka - tbmitw
